Slicing for the Perfect Percentage
At Orange Ember Studios, we always look for mechanics that seem simple at first glance but hide technical and addictive depth. This is how Exact Slice was born—our latest project developed in Godot 4.6.
The premise is straightforward: you have a pizza, and you must cut it to get a specific percentage. Sounds easy? Try getting a perfect 12.5% with a single stroke while the timer is ticking.
The Geometric Challenge in Godot 4.6
From a development standpoint, creating a robust 2D slicing system required advanced polygon handling. We used Polygon2D and CollisionPolygon2D to represent the pizzas, allowing each player’s stroke to recalculate the resulting shapes in real-time.
Powered by Jolt Physics
Although Exact Slice is primarily a 2D experience, we’ve integrated Jolt Physics to manage area detections and collisions with millimeter precision. This ensures that no matter how complex the cutting angle, the engine responds flawlessly.
Variety and Customization: The Skins
A pizza game wouldn’t be complete without a good variety of toppings. We’ve implemented a robust economy and customization system that allows players to unlock different styles:
- Cosmic: A pizza dusted with stardust.
- Royal: For the most sophisticated tastes, with golden crusts.
- Frozen: Straight from the freezer, with frosty visual effects.
Each skin is more than just a texture swap; thanks to our custom shader system and circular masks, the visual feedback when slicing feels unique for every style.
Polish and Game Feel
To make the game feel Premium, we focused heavily on micro-animations. When you make a cut:
- The pieces smoothly separate with a Tween effect.
- A bright flash highlights the cut line.
- The percentage is calculated and displayed with clean, vibrant typography.
It’s that combination of mathematical precision and visual satisfaction that defines the Exact Slice experience.
